Lekgoa Motleleng pleaded guilty to killing and raping Duduzile Zozo in September last year,
Judge Tshifiwa Maumela said the sentencing was aimed at making a difference to vulnerable groups in South Africa.
"No one has been given the right to correct alcoholics. No one has been given the right to correct those who take too much salt or sugar. No one has been given the right to correct others when it comes to the right to love their own gender… You can't interfere with how someone chooses to live," Judge Maumela said according to the newspaper.
"Lead your life and let gays and lesbians be," he said.
In his plea agreement, Motleleng confessed to killing Zozo because she had rejected his sexual advances.
While walking home with Zozo last year from a tavern in Thokoza, Motleleng propositioned her for sex - despite knowing that she was a lesbian.
When she refused, he forcibly kissed her.
After Zozo threatened to tell her brother about Motleleng's behaviour, he began strangling her.
Zozo collapsed, after which Motleleng retrieved a toilet brush from a lavatory and inserted it into her vagina.
He then strangled Zozo again, killing her.
